There was a massive and colorful party this past Saturday, May 6, in which the whole 27th street was closed from seventh to eighth avenue exclusively for FIT student’s enjoyment.
The “Candyland” theme was very present throughout the whole event, which was decorated in rainbow-colored ornaments and had many kiosks throughout the streets giving away all sorts of candy. A particularly sweet touch were the many pairs of candy-patterned socks given away by the Residence Hall Association, the official hosts of the annual block party.
In terms of entertainment, there was a gum-drop mountain rock wall, a licorice bounce trampoline, and a section in which students could participate in candy-cane jousting. Plenty of giveaways and activities were planned by RHA as well as other student clubs and sponsors such as Blick Art Materials, Boohoo, Crossfit NYC, NYU Dentistry, etc.
Some highlight activities included the Holi celebrations co-sponsored by the Indian Cultural Society club and International Student Services, where students honored the ancient spring Hindu tradition by throwing colored powder and water balloon to each other, and then engaging in dancing and sharing traditional Indian food.
Another great spotlight was the Leadership Ambassador’s table, in which students could share tips to relieve the stress of their daily lives— a particularly necessary activity during the last two weeks of classes, when finals are at its peak.
However, the free food was what attracted the most students, who enjoyed such things as free waffles by Waffles & Dingles, tacos by Big D’s Grub Truck and other warm foods like hot dogs, soy dogs and dumplings. Hubert’s Lemonade and Bai tea made a presence in the drinks side of business.
The block party started at 12 pm and finished around 4 pm, when most FIT students attending already had enough tastes of the sweet event.
