As the final two weeks of the Spring semester approach, most FIT students probably are exhaling a collective sigh of relief at the prospect of the class-free Summer months. For one particular student group, though, not returning to the FIT classrooms extends beyond the Summer— the graduate class of 2017.
The Commencement ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 25 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadow, Queens, and will celebrate all four FIT schools: the School of Art and Design, the the Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology, the School for Liberal Arts and the School of Graduate Studies. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 am.
Essie Weingarten, founder of Essie Cosmetics and FIT alumna, will be the speaker at the 2017 commencement ceremony and will be the Honorary Degree Recipient of a State University of New York honorary degree. LL Cool J, hip-hop artist, actor and author, will receive the President’s Award for Creative Excellence.
“I believe the presence of these accomplished individuals will add to the sense of celebration for the FIT Class of 2017,” said FIT President Dr. Joyce F. Brown. “I am delighted to share this information.”
In addition, to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduate students, there have been many activities during what is called Grad Week, taking place from Saturday, May 6 to Friday, May 12.
Some of the events taking place during that time included the RHA Block Party, the Future of Fashion Show Viewing, the Silent Disco Party, a Campus to Career Panel, the Grad Week Flea Market, Various Decorate Your Cap events and the much anticipated Semi-Formal, which theme this year is Phantom of the Opera.
Whether they are participating in most events or powering through those last finals, W27 wants to wish the graduate class of 2017 our most sincere congratulations: you made it. Now go and celebrate!
